Some concepts never seem to fade, such as President Donald Trump’s long-standing interest in purchasing Greenland. This notion has been on Trump’s mind for a while, and the Danes have now decided to respond creatively.
Their response? Proposing that Denmark should buy California instead.
The Denmarkification Initiative. An online petition titled “Denmarkification” has been signed by over 200,000 individuals, suggesting that acquiring California could be Denmark’s next big adventure.
“Have you ever gazed at a map and thought, ‘What Denmark truly lacks is more sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates,’” reads the petition’s website, suggesting this dream could soon come true.
California in Focus. The emphasis on California is due to several reasons. Primarily, the state offers abundant sunshine, something Denmark sorely misses during its long winters, with daylight sometimes lasting only an hour. Moreover, the petition’s proponents seem intrigued by California’s tech industry, deeming it essential for any democracy.
The petition also humorously highlights California’s avocados, promising Denmark an endless supply for avocado toast. Additionally, there’s Disneyland, which would be rebranded as “Hans Christian Andersenland,” honoring one of Denmark’s most renowned authors, famous for tales like “The Little Mermaid” and “Thumbelina.”

Could California Be Sold? The petition’s creators speculate that selling California might interest Trump, given his disputable relationship with the state.
“Let’s face it—California isn’t exactly Trump’s favorite state. He’s referred to it as ‘the most ruined state in the Union’ and has clashed with its officials repeatedly. We suspect he’d entertain selling it for the right offer,” the authors assert.
Though Trump has never publicly suggested selling California, tensions with the state are well-documented. Amid recent wildfires in Los Angeles, he threatened to halt federal relief funds unless California modified its water management strategies.
The Hypothetical Process. Reaching half a million signatures would supposedly kick off the Denmarkification procedure. The petition organizers plan to crowdfund the estimated $1 trillion needed to “buy” California, asking each Danish citizen for a 200,000 kroner contribution, roughly $17,700.
“Forego a few lattes, and you’re covered,” the petition humorously suggests.
Lego executives and cast members from the Danish political drama Borgen would hypothetically handle negotiations.
It’s All in Good Fun. Ultimately, the petition functions as an elaborate satire. “This campaign is 100% real… in our dreams,” reads a statement on the website, listing backers like “Karen from Accounting” and “Sven the Viking.”
Though playful, the “Denmarkification” petition reflects the absurdity of discussing territorial acquisitions in the modern era. Trump’s interest in Greenland, driven by its mineral resources and strategic value, highlights this.
Beyond Greenland, Trump has voiced interest in other territories, such as the Panama Canal and the Gaza Strip, even suggesting relocating Gaza’s population to develop a Middle Eastern “Riviera.”
A Historical Interest in Greenland. Notably, the U.S. has pursued Greenland in the past, marking its fifth attempt. A notable offer of $100 million was made to Denmark for Greenland back in 1940.
