If you’ve recently noticed a surge of images featuring a blue-faced Grinch and references to knee surgery on your social media feeds, rest assured, you’re not losing your mind. Knee surgeries are not the latest trend like lip fillers; rather, it’s the latest meme sweeping the internet.
«That Feeling When Knee Surgery Is Tomorrow». Initially, when I stumbled across these blue-faced Grinch images on social media, I felt out of the loop, as if I was missing some sort of inside joke exclusive to younger generations. I even entertained the notion that it might be a deep social commentary, similar to the Chill Guy meme.
As it turns out, I was overanalyzing. According to tech journalist Taylor Lorenz in her User Mag newsletter, the meme mainly functions as a form of meta humor.
“Sharing the blue Grinch knee surgery meme online is a low-stakes method to create online communities, connect with other fans of absurd humor, and possibly achieve viral status if your meme post takes off,” Lorenz explained. “Occasionally, the meme is used to hint at a dreaded event, but it is mostly intended to be ironic.”
Meme Origins. Although the meme’s presence is widespread now, it didn’t just emerge out of the blue. According to Know Your Meme, the phrase “That Feeling When Knee Surgery Is Tomorrow” first surfaced in mid-2021. Interestingly, the meme’s original image wasn’t the Grinch but featured a victorious-looking squirrel.
Since then, the meme has evolved, taking on various forms, including one featuring Drake, before reaching its current viral status. As Lorenz reported, the meme recently regained popularity on TikTok, with users posting it ironically. Numerous meme accounts have since adopted the blue Grinch meme as their profile image, spreading it further across Instagram and X.
Commercial Exploitation. Inevitably, when something popular emerges, attempts to monetize it soon follow. Enter the grifters—those who try to create crypto coins from unusual trends, like the celebrated pygmy hippo, Moo Deng.
Indeed, “That Feeling When Knee Surgery Is Tomorrow” now has its own cryptocurrency, $KNEE, on the Solana blockchain. While this might sound amusing, it’s crucial to remember that memecoins are highly volatile and often scams, rarely delivering profitable returns.
Temporary Fame. Like all memes, the blue-faced Grinch is unlikely to linger in popularity. Recall when the internet was flooded with brat memes? We’ve moved past that. Or the buzz around Dune’s sandworm? Gone too. But that’s the nature of memes—they’re not designed to last forever. We can certainly anticipate a new one to take its place soon.
